IBM/Lenovo PCs and servers are the most reliable in the business, according to a new study whose data is culled from more than 20,000 service calls to a national computer-support company.

The Syracuse, NY-based Rescucom provides on-site sales and service through franchisees that are concentrated mostly on the coasts.

The reliability study weighs "Reliability Scores" assigned to each vendor based on the percentage difference between U.S. market share and the percentage of calls received by Rescucom involving that company.

IBM led the pack with a score of 243, followed by Apple with 201 then, after a huge drop, Hewlett-Packard/Compaq comes in with a score of 12. Dell scored four and Gateway scored a negative 12.

The study does not differentiate based on IT support in the customer's company, so a relatively low number of calls could mean the hardware is more reliable, or whether an internal IT department is keeping it up to speed.
