Systems Channel News Roundup for the week of Nov. 2-6, 2009.
Cisco, EMC and VMware form virtual coalition
Cisco Systems, EMC and VMware have joined forces to form the Virtual Computing Environment coalition.
The companies said the new coalition will make it easier for partners to sell preconfigured and pretested hardware, storage and virtualization bundles. The trio is also training each vendor's support staffs on each other's products and is publishing VBlock reference architectures to make configuration easier, according to SearchITChannel.com.
VBlock Infrastructure Packages are the main offerings in the Virtual Computing Environment coalition. The packages consist of Cisco Systems Inc.'s Unified Computing System, Nexus 1000v and Multilayer Directional Switches; EMC Corp.'s Symmetrix V-Max storage; and VMware Inc.'s vSphere. The packages will come in three variants -- VBlock 0 (entry level version), VBlock 1 (for medium-sized businesses) and VBlock 2 (for high-end configurations), according to SearchServerVirtualization.com.
Cisco and EMC also introduced a separate joint venture, Acadia, which focuses on helping customers build private cloud infrastructures.
Red Hat releases new virtualization platform for cloud
Red Hat Inc. has released a new virtualization platform with management tools for server deployments and cloud environments.
The Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization for Servers product includes a standalone hypervisor designed to host Linux and Microsoft Windows virtual servers and desktops. The hypervisor uses KVM technology to provide more efficient guest consolidation and live migration, Red Hat said.
The new platform also includes Enterprise Virtualization Manager for Servers, which configures, provisions and manages virtualized Linux and Microsoft Windows servers -- but only supports management servers running Windows Server 2003.
