Survey shows Windows Server 2008 R2 hesitation
Solutions providers should find that thier potential or exiting customers are excited about Active Directory improvements, Remote Desktop Services and Hyper-V R2 Live Migration in Windows Server 2008 R2, according to the results of TechTarget's 2009 Windows Purchasing Intentions survey. But customers are still wary of actually implementing Windows Server 2008 R2.
The results of the recent survey, which had more than 800 respondents, show that 77% of respondents still use Windows Server 2003, 53% plan to implement Windows Server 2008 R2 and 33% are still putting the new version through testing.
Of the 342 IT pros that plan on putting Windows Server 2008 R2 into production, 34% said they will implement by the end of this year, 22% in the first quarter of 2010 and 15% by the second quarter.
Citrix changes XenDesktop licensing
Citrix Systems plans to change its XenDesktop 4 licensing from "per concurrent user" to "per named user." In response to user complaints, the company will also allow per-device licensing.
The changes mean that solutions providers can now give their customers the ability to decide whether they want to assign the license to a user or to a device. This option will be available for the XenDesktop 4 Enterprise and Platinum editions.
Citrix also announced a new virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) XenDesktop edition that will bring XenDesktop capabilities to customers' XenApp environments, according to SearchVirtuaDesktop.com. The VDI edition will also have concurrent user licensing.
