Zend gathers big guns for PHP cloud API
IBM, Microsoft, Nirvanix, Rackspace and GoGrid have partnered with PHP firm Zend Technologies to launch a cloud computing application programming interface (API).
Zend intends to use the open source API as an access service for "all major cloud platforms," according to SearchCloudComputing.com.
The Simple Cloud API will be translated to any object-oriented language for the Web, and the working PHP implementation will be available as part of the Zend PHP Framework.
Open source data integration on the rise
Despite the injured economy, a recent survey by Gartner Inc. reveals that interest in open source data integration technology is slowly -- but steadily -- growing.
The survey shows that 11% of data integration providers have evaluated open source tools and commercial products, which is double the percentage from the 2008 survey results. A whopping 83% of survey respondents use open source data integration tools for ETL functions that support business intelligence and data warehousing projects, according to SearchDataManagement.com.
