Systems Channel News Roundup for the week of Aug. 31-Sept. 4, 2009.

VMware signs agreements with Dell and RTO Software

SAN FRANCISCO -- VMware this week said it has signed virtualization software deals for VMware View with Dell and RTO Software.

More than 1 million VMware View seats have been sold to more than 7,000 desktop customers, according to Patrick Harr, vice president of enterprise desktop marketing with VMware Inc.

Harr said users are starting to see the appeal of desktop virtualization and that large scale deployments may realize total cost of ownership savings of $600 or more per end user in less than six months.

"The number one reason people don't virtualize desktops is cost, but acquisition costs have dropped below $1,000 per seat," Harr said during a press conference at VMworld 2009.

VMware also announced an OEM agreement with Dell to bundle VMware View with the Dell's Flexible Computing solutions. VMware is actively working on a client hypervisor and server-hosted desktop virtualization products.

VMware also signed an OEM agreement with RTO Software to sell its user persona technology, Virtual Profiles, which lets VMware View users have their own profile on their desktops.

Red Hat creates partner program and releases product updates

Red Hat has launched its new Red Hat Catalyst Program, the JBoss Enterprise Application Platform 5.0, Red Hat Network Satellite 5.3 and Enterprise Linux 5.4.

The company designed Red Hat Catalyst Program to help partners with marketing initiatives. The program will also feature a social networking and collaborative Web portal in the near future to help Red Hat Inc.'s partners discuss products and services.

Red Hat created JBoss Enterprise Application Platform 5.0 so customers could take advantage of cloud computing opportunities; it's the first commercially available Java EE application server available in Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud. The new platform supports Plain Old Java Objects, Java EE, Spring Framework, OSGi and Google Web Toolkit. Customers are expected to benefit from easier application development and deployment, protection against programming model changes and an easier transition to newer application deployment models.

Red Hat Network Satellite 5.3 is the company's latest systems management product that provides software updates, configuration management, provisioning and monitoring across both physical and virtual Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.4 now includes kernel-based virtual machine technology, Intel Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O (Intel VT-d) and PCI-SIG Single Route I/O Virtualization, which allows multiple virtual machines in an Intel Xeon Processor 5500 to directly share I/O devices. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.4 is now available on HP BladeSystem and HP ProLiant servers.
