Microsoft harbors partner program changes and Azure news
Just days before Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference 2009, the company has appointed a new U.S. channel chief and rearranged its partner program executives.
A major restructuring of Microsoft's channel partner program is expected to be unveiled at the conference next week, which takes place in New Orleans. The program will focus on helping top partners build their business, but the top partners will be few based on performance criteria, according to SearchITChannel.com. The new program will also place more emphasis on certifications and vertical industries.
Microsoft is also expected to announce its pricing and sales model for Azure services next week and must figure out how to provide solid partner incentives and compete with Amazon's low-cost cloud services.
VMware takes pity on Virtual Iron customers
VMware is offering discounts to Virtual Iron customers in response to reports that Oracle has stopped selling Virtual Iron software.
The discounts are on VMware's vSphere 4 and vCenter Server virtualization offerings.
Oracle Corp. recently acquired Virtual Iron Software Inc. and quickly discontinued its products. At the time of purchase, Virtual Iron was said to have approximately 2,000 customers, although many users had already defected from the platform, according to SearchServerVirtualization.com.
