Systems Channel News Roundup for the week of June 29-July 3, 2009.

Enterprises: Windows 7 compatibility makes it a winner

New features in Windows 7, which is set to release to manufacturing next month, have set the operating system apart from Vista, according to several users.

The addition of DirectAccess and BitLocker are good improvements, but Windows 7's compatibility, speed and faster login are the key reasons for upgrades, according to SearchEnterpriseDesktop.com.

Windows 7 also has enhanced Internet Explorer browser security features that can be turned on without upgrading to the new R2 server, said Rand Morimoto, president of Convergent Computing, an enterprise IT consulting company in California.

IT administrators have the ability to grant top executives with access rights to select servers while restricting employees' access to specific websites. This action does require some kind of Windows server with Active Directory, but it doesn't have to be the new Windows Server 2008 R2.

VMware Studio 2.0 beta geared toward wider audience

An updated version of VMware's free virtual appliance authoring software, VMware Studio 2.0 beta, is now available to the public.

With the release of this new version, VMware Inc. is attempting to get a stronger grip on the client-side virtualization software that its customers use to test, configure and package virtual machines (VMs). The new software is intended to reach beyond independent software vendors and toward developers and VMware administrators, according to SearchServerVirtualization.com.

Studio 2.0 features support for vApp, an Eclipse plug-in, support for building Windows VMs and the ability to import existing VMs.
