Systems Channel News Roundup for the week of June 8-12, 2009.

Tech Data introduces new video surveillance software

IT products distributor Tech Data will now include video surveillance and physical security software in its Apple Specialized Business Unit.

Tech Data Corp. has joined forces with videoNEXT Network Solutions Inc., a physical security information management software developer that runs programs on Mac OS X. Tech Data's Apple VARs can now use videoNEXT's surveillance technologies, which has specific products for small businesses, large organizations and government agencies.

Businesses that use Apple products will no longer need to load virtualization software in order to create a Windows or Linux environment that can run a physical security management system. Users of the video software can use any Apple computer that is connected to the network as an IP security control station.

Red Hat releases free open source operating system

Red Hat Inc.'s Fedora Project has made the latest version of its free operating system, Fedora 11, available to the public.

Fedora 11 has several key features, including improvements in its virtualization components, an upgraded interactive console, a new ext4 file system and MinGW cross compilation system, a redesigned virtual machine guest creation wizard and a new beta portal project called the Fedora Community. The PackageKit feature allows for content handler installation, and an updated input method system was designed to better support international users.

The kernel mode-setting feature was developed to shorten boot times and present a cleaner graphical interface to users during startup. The new version is compatible with a wider selection of ATI cards, including those from Intel and Nvidia Corp.
