Red Hat, Synnex partner on open source

Red Hat and Synnex announced the launch of the Open Source Channel Alliance on Tuesday.

The goal of the alliance is to introduce open source technologies to a broader base of VARs and systems integrators.

Synnex Corp. will deliver a variety of open source independent software vendor (ISV) applications as stated in an agreement with nine founding ISV members. The open source ISV applications include Red Hat Enterprise Linux and JBoss Enterprise Middleware.

The Open Source Channel Alliance is only available in North American markets.

Cisco reveals more info on Unified Computing System

Executives at Cisco Systems released new details on the architectural and product specs of its Unified Computing System on a live Internet TV broadcast and Q&A session on Thursday.

Soni Jiandani, vice president of marketing for the Cisco Server Access Virtualization Group, and David Lawler, vice president of the group, discussed pricing, total cost of ownership details, performance metrics and implications for the virtualization and data center market.

Cisco's new system has been touted as an ideal platform for virtualization because the company focused on reducing virtualization pain points surrounding I/O, CPU and memory, according to SearchDataCenter.com.

Oracle repairs database management system flaws

Oracle released its quarterly Critical Patch Update on Tuesday, citing 43 flaws found in its database management system, application server and application product lines.

The Oracle CPU had patches addressing 16 flaws affecting Oracle Database 11g, 10g and 9i, according to SearchSecurity.com. Oracle Resource Manager, which allocates CPU resources, rated nine on the Common Vulnerability Scoring System -- the highest score. The major flaw could have allowed an attacker to gain complete control of a database. The vulnerability affects Oracle Database Server 9.2.0.8 and 9.2.0.8DV, Oracle said.
