In a recent SearchITChannel.com survey, more than 600 solutions providers revealed their top IT priorities for 2009. The results were then compared to a similar survey of IT users to find out exactly how well systems solutions providers know their target market. The survey also focused on how the recession has influenced clients' budgets, and the challenges and concerns they face when deploying infrastructure projects -- particularly disaster recovery and business continuity (DR/BC), server and desktop virtualization, Windows Server 2008 and green computing technologies.

End user survey shows what clients want from VARs and vendors
A summary of our end user survey discloses what clients expect from VARs, details on client spending and suggestions for retaining and attracting clients.

For the most part, systems solutions providers were in tune with how much importance their clients placed on each technology. DR/BC projects were viewed as the most essential type of infrastructure projects, followed by server virtualization. Desktop virtualization projects have the lowest priority for 2009, which suggests that systems solutions providers and users have not yet realized the benefits that this technology could bring to their environments.

The main source of discord among survey respondents came from Windows Server 2008 projects. Systems solutions providers see migration to the server as a priority, whereas users don't recognize upgrading as a significant concern. Users are most concerned with projects and technologies that can save them money during the recession. The IT priorities 2009 survey results revealed that about 60% of users and VARs anticipate future budget cuts, so there's a low probability of heavy investments in infrastructure projects.
