Systems Channel News Roundup for Feb. 9-13, 2009.

Red Hat crosses $500 million revenue mark

Red Hat's revenue topped $500 million in the 2008 fiscal year -- a first for an open source company, SearchEnterpriseLinux.com reports. President and CEO Jim Whitehurst made the announcement in the "State of the Union at Red Hat" release he issued Monday.

"Red Hat has continued to execute well in what is a pretty competitive economic climate," Whitehurst wrote.

Red Hat has also reported 27 consecutive quarters of sequential revenue growth.

High availability coming for VMware vCenter

One of the VMworld Europe cats is out of the bag.

VMware will announce vCenter Server Heartbeat, a high-availability offering for vCenter servers, at the show in Cannes on Feb. 24, according to SearchServerVirtualization.com. VMware said Server Heartbeat will protect vCenter from most data center failures. That's extremely important, because when vCenter fails, VMotion, Distributed Resource Scheduler, license management and performance monitoring all go with it.

vCenter Server Heartbeat will be available by mid-March.

MSPAlliance launches master certification

The MSPAlliance this week came out with an Accredited Master MSP designation, designed to recognize advanced managed services providers. Interested MSPs can earn the designation through the alliance's Managed Services Accreditation Program; MSPs that already have the alliance's network operations center (NOC) accreditation will receive the Accredited Master MSP designation automatically.

"This higher-level designation will help differentiate our firm, as well as other Master MSPs, from those that only deliver software-as-a-service solutions or other related granular offerings, rather than reselling proprietary NOC services," said Lane Smith, president of Do IT Smarter, in a statement.
