Systems Channel News Roundup for Feb. 2-6, 2009.

Microsoft announces Windows 7 SKUs

Microsoft is focusing on simplicity with its Windows 7 SKUs. The lineup, announced this week, includes six versions of the operating system, and just two recommended for businesses: Windows 7 Professional for small businesses and Windows 7 Enterprise for medium-sized and large businesses. The other versions will be Windows 7 Starter, Windows 7 Home Basic, Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Ultimate.

Microsoft also said this week that it won't release any more public betas of Windows 7. Find out how to install Windows 7 Beta and learn about its User Account Control feature in these videos by Windows expert J. Peter Bruzzese.

Dell-Cisco deal gets user approval

Early user reaction to the Dell-Cisco Systems data center partnership has been positive, according to SearchDataCenter.com. Last month the two vendors announced plans to integrate Cisco's Nexus switches with Dell's PowerEdge servers and storage, which IT pros say will simplify data center infrastructure. Potential benefits include reduced cabling fewer network adapters in data centers, which can significantly cut costs.

CIOs find hidden desktop virtualization costs

Vendors and solutions providers expect 2009 to be a break-out year for desktop virtualization, but some early adopters say the technology isn't all it's cracked up to be, according to SearchCIO.com. These users are saving money on desktop support and management -- the key benefits of desktop virtualization -- but they're also seeing unexpected cost increases in software licensing, storage and other infrastructure upgrades.
