Oracle layoffs are channel 'bloodbath'
Oracle layoffs earlier this month hit the company's channel management and telesales operations especially hard. The database giant cut between 500 and 800 jobs the week of Jan. 5. Several Oracle partners told SearchITChannel.com this week that they lost their channel reps, and they suspect Oracle will be taking more deals direct. One partner even described the channel cuts as a "bloodbath."
VMware partner conference registration opens
VMware partners can now register for VMware Partner Exchange 2009, the company's second annual partner conference. The show is April 14-16 in Orlando, and the theme is "The Power of Partnership." There will be three keynote speakers: CEO Paul Maritz, CTO Stephen Herrod and Carl Eschenbach, executive vice president of worldwide field operations.
Red Hat releases RHEL 5.3
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.3 hit the market this week, after a three-month run in beta. The new operating system has more than 150 new features, including OpenJDK and Systemtap for developers, support for Intel Core i7 Nehalem processors and power management updates. Red Hat also increased its virtualization support for x86-64 systems, as the new OS will now support up to 126 CPUs and 1TB of memory.
IBM, SAP announce Alloy
IBM and SAP have been working together for 35 years, but this week they announced their first joint software product. Monday at Lotusphere, the companies unveiled Alloy, which lets users work with data from the SAP Business Suite in IBM Lotus Notes. Both vendors said they will sell the initial release.
