Systems channel news roundup for Dec. 29, 2008-Jan. 2, 2009.

Windows 7 leaks

A beta version of Windows 7 leaked online this week. Microsoft is banking on Windows 7, which is due late this year or early next year, to right its ship after the failure of Windows Vista. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer Microsoft Blog recaps reviews of the Windows 7 beta, which Microsoft could publicly release at next week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Cloud computing: Just a fad?

Putting all your eggs into the cloud computing basket this year? Not so fast, says one expert. "Even in the best-case scenario it seems like it can only really solve a small subset of the industry's needs," Goolsbee writes. "In the worst case it will be a punch line for lame jokes a few years from now."

Enterprise Linux year in review

The enterprise Linux community had a busy year in 2008, as Red Hat, Novell and Ubuntu all moved toward virtualization and cloud computing -- and Sun Microsystems faced a potential meltdown. Check out SearchEnterpriseLinux.com's year in review as you prepare your Linux business for 2009.
