The Environmental Protection Agency and computer vendors are working on a specification that will make it easier for data center managers to judge and control the amount of power used by servers and other high-end computer equipment.
PCs and other small computing devices are already covered under the EPA's Energy Star program, which encourages manufacturers to reduce the amount of power each unit draws, and gives an energy use estimate that can be used to compare none machine to another.
The draft protocol the EPA released last month covers test procedures and measurements that would provide a series of figures that show the power use of a particular server under a range of different performance loads. The standard will focus on 1U and 2U rack servers, not larger form factors or blades.
