New BPOS contracts add tension to Microsoft vs. Google battle
Microsoft won a couple battles in the Microsoft versus Google war by chalking up two big wins with New York City and the state of California.
California and NYC signed new Business Productivity Online Standard (BPOS) suite deals (BPOS is now known as Microsoft Office 365.) As part of its contract, California plans to migrate 200,000 employees to the Microsoft-hosted email and collaboration tools. New York City said it will save $50 million in license fees by merging its Microsoft licenses into one by migrating to cloud services.
Google cried dirty pool about the contract process, but some observers think Microsoft's security model legitimately edges out Google. Solution providers, however, also need to be aware of recent BPOS and other Microsoft services outages including a Live Meeting snafu last week.

ConVirt Enterprise is viewed as an open source and less pricey analog to vCenter from the VMware universe.
The product, the latest release of which launched this summer, targets IT managers who build and maintain virtual data centers and private clouds based on Xen and/or KVM open source hypervisors but who need advanced management capabilities.
VMware claims SMB wins
VMware says its push to win over small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) is bearing fruit, but customers say it's not enough.
To hook SMBs, VMware added VMotion live migration features to its Essentials Plus license and that sparked SMB sales, according to the company.
But attendees of the recent New England Area VMware Users Group meeting said that SMBs want more than live migration as they become more sophisticated with virtualization, according to SearchServerVirtualization.com.
