Vendor Management Strategies for the CIONew Cisco protocol for NX-OS, UCS
Cisco Systems Inc. will attach its new FabricPath protocol to the Nexus operating system (NX-OS) in the third quarter of 2010.
FabricPath has the capability to integrate with the Cisco Unified Computing System and will be priced as a module for NX-OS, licensed at $25,000 per switch chassis, according to SearchServerVirtualization.com.
The new Cisco protocol will help solutions providers migrate their customers' virtual servers across domains, the company said. FabricPath will work with up to 2,048 servers connected by 10 Gigabit Ethernet at full line rate.
This latest Cisco protocol follows the Internet Engineering Task Force's Transparent Interconnection of Lots of Links standard. It has its roots in the spanning tree protocol, which ensures LAN information travels smoothly between Layer 2 domains while helping to avoid bridge loops.
The company announced at Cisco Live this week in Las Vegas that FabricPath will receive switching

hardware support, starting with the Nexus 7000 F-Series and Catalyst 4948-E switches. The F-Series switch is priced at $35,000 and the Catalyst at $10,495.
Oracle VM machine in the offing
To boost its virtualization market presence, Oracle is in the process of creating an Oracle VM machine.
The Oracle VM machine will contain the Oracle VM hypervisor, Oracle VM Manager software and server, networking and storage equipment, President Charles Phillips said, according to SearchITChannel.com.
Oracle's plan comes in the wake of growing interest for the Oracle Exadata database machine, which can cost about $1 million but allows solutions providers to integrate Oracle Linux, a database and related middleware without issue. Thursday's earnings call revealed the news that hardware sales were better than expected and contributed $400 million to Oracle's operating income in the fourth quarter of 2009.
