VMware acquires RTO assets to boost VMware View

VMware's RTO Software assets acquisition is expected to improve management of users' profiles, data files and settings for VMware View.

Solutions providers will now be able use RTO Software Inc.'s Virtual Profiles to virtualize users' profiles and separate user data files, settings and application access from the desktop image. This separation improves flexibility with application access and improves backup and file management.

RTO Software's Discover and PinPoint are two other assets included in the acquisition. Both are expected to be integrated into VMware View.

Worldwide server market shipments show growth

Despite a worldwide server market decline for 2009, last year's fourth quarter showed improvement from 2008.

There was 4.5% year-over-year growth for shipments in the worldwide server market, despite a 3.2% drop in revenue for that quarter, according to Gartner Inc.

The increase in server market shipments can be attributed to greater demand for IBM's x86 servers, a trend that boosted shipments by 6.3% and revenue by 14.3% for the fourth

Although IBM was the worldwide leader in server market revenue with $4.1 billion, its fourth quarter recorded a 5.9% year-over-year decrease. HP was ahead of the pack in server shipments, with a fourth quarter year-over-year increase of 3.8%.
