Q: Have you worked with the Application Compatibility Toolkit for Vista and, especially, the Standard User Analyzer?

About the author
J. Peter Bruzzese is an independent consultant and has worked for and with Goldman Sachs, CommVault Systems and Microsoft, among other clients. He focuses on corporate training and travels frequently to speak at conferences. Peter is the author of Tricks of the Windows Vista Masters and writes for Redmond Magazine. Listen to his supplemental podcast on Vista deployment to hear more information about compatibility problems and Vista vs. XP.

We mentioned this on the customer side in terms of investigating what software a client is utilizing. However, from a consultant standpoint, you are the one who ultimately has to work with the tool. Make sure that you have reliable information about an application before you say it doesn't have compatibility with Vista. If the problem is simply the mitigation of permissions, use the Standard User Analyzer to handle the changing of permissions for that one piece of software.

Return to the Vista deployment services FAQ guide and read the rest of Peter's expert responses.
