VMware solutions have traditionally been viewed as enterprise-level products targeted at large businesses. However, these days VMware is aggressively targeting the SMB market. VMware offers SMB-focused tools to its reseller partners, and it offers entry-level package pricing on its products in the form of the VI3 Starter Edition, which retails for $1,000, not including the required support.

Also, on VMware's SMB solution page, the company will soon be offering new packages geared toward the SMB market, called Virtual Infrastructure Acceleration Kits. These kits basically offer two or three ESX Server licenses as well as some features like Virtual Machine File System (VMFS), Virtual SMP, VirtualCenter and VMware Consolidated Backup.

The kits come in three flavors: VMware Infrastructure Foundation, VMware Standard HA and VMware Infrastructure Midsize. Standard HA comes with high-availability features, along with the other standard features; Infrastructure Midsize comes with all of the advanced VMware features (Vmotion, Storage Vmotion, DRS, etc.), plus 30 training credits. These new aggressively priced packages should be available by the end of 2007, and they show that VMware is serious about targeting the SMB market.
